Kerbside collection services
Forbes Shire Council, along with Parkes, Cabonne, Blayney, Orange and Bathurst Councils, have contracted JR Richards & Sons (through a Joint Recycling Contract administered through NetWaste) to undertake the kerbside general waste, recycling and Food Organics & Garden Organics (FOGO) collection service. As part of the 10 year contract commenced in April 2016, the kerbside collection service is offered to the residents of Forbes and surroundings (approx. 5 km from CBD) which includes approximately 3700 collections.
Approximately 250 public litter bins spread across the shire are also collected as part of the same waste collection contract. Kerbside collection service is also extended to the commercial and industrial establishments across Forbes town. The majority of businesses receive a recycling and general waste collection service. It is the responsibility of the businesses to protect the bins and keep them inside their premises except for the collection day.

Three bin service
Presently council provides 3 bins each of 240 litre capacity for segregation of waste at source - a yellow lid bin for dry recycling material, a green lid bin for food and garden organics and a red lid bin for remaining general waste. Recycling and General waste bins are collected fortnightly while the food and garden organics bin is collected weekly from the kerbside on nominated days.
Presently council provides 2 bins each of 240 litre capacity for segregation of waste at source - a yellow lid bin for dry recycling material and a red lid bin for remaining general waste. Recycling and General waste bins are collected fortnightly and weekly respectively on nominated days. Although not compulsory, businesses can opt in for a weekly collection of a green lid bin for food and garden organics waste. Businesses can have more than one bins or more than one collection per week based on their requirements.
Kitchen Caddy is a small bin provided along with your green lid FOGO bin. It can be used in your kitchen to keep the food waste separate and to avoid contamination with other non-food waste. It also makes transferring your food scraps from the kitchen to the green lid bin easier. If you have not received one, please contact the council's customer service to order one. Please don’t put food and garden waste in any kind of plastic bags. Food can be wrapped in paper before being placed in the green lid bin. What happens to your waste after it is collected ?
- Recycling: The collection contractor JR Richards,
takes the contents of the yellow lid recycling bin from all
participating councils to Orange where they are containerised and taken
to the Visy Recycling
plant in Sydney for processing. At Visy, the recycling materials are
segregated in streams such as paper, plastics, aluminium cans, glass
etc. and then the segregated materials are sent to respective industries
- FOGO: The collection contractor J R Richards, takes the contents of the
green lid FOGO bin to Australian Native Landscapes at Blayney where it
is shredded and reprocessed into compost, mulches, potting mixes and/or
soils for future use.
- General waste: All general waste from the red lid recycling bin is
deposited to the Daroobalgie Waste Management Facility where it is
landfilled. This waste stays there forever and generates Green House
Gases which are harmful to both environment as well as to human health.
Hence we recommend to reduce the general waste and segregate materials
which can be recycled.
