In the lead up to the NSW Local Government elections on Saturday 4th September, the Forbes Shire Council will be conducting a candidate briefing session on Wednesday 28 July 2021.
"The candidate sessions will be delivered via a webinar and conducted by Local Government NSW facilitators," says Forbes Shire Council General Manager, Steve Loane. "The webinar will provide people the information they need to determine whether they wish to put their hand up for this year’s election. Council staff will be on hand to answer any questions.”
The briefing session will provide an opportunity for potential candidates to:
- Identify the requirements of becoming a councillor
- Recognise how the councillor role fits in with other roles and levels of government
- Address key expectations and potential challenges in becoming a councillor
- Know the councillor role fits in with Integrated Planning and Reporting
- Understand the elements of council meetings, including code of conduct and conflict of interest.
"To be a councillor you will be expected to represent your community and have input into what happens in the Shire,” continues Mr Loane. “You will be required to oversee Council's delivery program and strategic policy. Councillors also have input into strategic planning for service delivery and projects undertaken within our Shire. It really is a strategic position and one worth consideration.
"Being a Councillor does however require a fair amount of your time and you will need to attend community forums, Council meetings, workshops and briefing sessions," Mr Loane states. "Every month Councillors receive a business paper which needs consideration for the monthly Council meeting the following week."
The deadline to nominate as a candidate for this year’s local government election is fast approaching, 4th August 2021 and residents are asked to consider taking the opportunity to represent their Shire at the upcoming Local Government Elections.
