Installation of CCTV cameras commences for Forbes CBDLast modified: September 17, 2009 - 10:12 AM
This week work commenced on the installation of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras within the Forbes central business district (CBD).
Research suggests that a towns CBD attracts a higher percentage of crime, particularly at night and on weekends and Council is confident that the installation of CCTV cameras will act as a significant deterrent to ‘would be' offenders. Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM says "Council is very pleased to progress this important project. We are committed to the reduction of crime in our community and this is a fantastic step towards achieving that goal". The project is being funded under the Federal Infrastructure Stimulus Program where Council allocated $110,000 towards the installation of security cameras within the CBD area of town. Following the allocation of funds, Council formed a working party that included representatives from the Police, Forbes Taxi Service and the Forbes Business Chamber. The working party then made recommendations on the various locations that cameras would be installed throughout the CBD. Local firm Lachlan Antenna and Security have been engaged to supply and install 38 Cameras that will enable 24 hour, 7 day a week monitoring and surveillance of the CBD area including a link to the Forbes Police station. Work is expected to be completed by 30 September 2009 to comply with the funding guidelines however future second and third stages are planned. The working party will continue to meet and provide advice regarding all future stages.Contact details |
