Mulga Bill and Ben Hall Ride into Forbes

Last modified: August 27, 2009 - 12:02 AM

Three former members of the 1970’s folk revival band, Mulga Bill’s Bicycle Band, will perform together once more at the Ben Hall Festival in Forbes this October long weekend.

An Evening with Mulga Bill, Ben Hall and Pink Slip is planned as a feast of food, song, history and folklore to be held at Mezzanine Style, 23 Rankin Street, Forbes at 7pm on Saturday October 3, 2009.

Former Mulga Bill’s Bicycle Band member Chris Bettle has planned the special event which will see three of his former band mates - Barry Goanna Golding, Liz Eager and Marsh Robinson, reunite in Forbes for their first performance together since their national and international touring days of folk fame ended in 1978.

Mr Bettle said “Mulga Bill’s Bicycle Band was renowned for celebrating traditional Australian stories like that of the bushranger Ben Hall. Barry, Liz and Marsh can’t wait to perform ‘The Streets of Forbes’ live in Forbes for the very first time.”

The other highlight of the evening will be a conversation about the life and times of Ben Hall between relatives of the bushranger, and a noted local folklore expert.

Forbes local Rob Willis, Folklorist and Oral Historian with the National Library of Australia, will lead the conversation with Ben Hall, great grandson of bushranger Ben Hall; Peter Bradley, noted author of ‘The Judas Covenant: the betrayal and death of Ben Hall’ (2006) and great, great grandson of Ben Hall’s brother Henry; and Jeff Freeman, a Eugowra blacksmith and great, great grandson of Ben Hall’s brother-in-law John McGuire (who is reputed to have written the words of ‘The Streets of Forbes’).

The night will also include special archival film footage sourced from episodes of the former ABC-TV series ‘A Big Country’ featuring both ‘Ben Hall’ and ‘Mulga Bill’s Bicycle Band’.

Local Forbes band, Pink Slip will also perform live. Featuring the strong vocals of young emerging talents Callum and Harrison Baker, together with Harry Hayes, Pink Slip have been taking local Forbes venues by storm. Tickets are $30 each and this includes a three course traditional meal.

To book your tickets contact Mezzanine Style on (02) 6851 4056.
Come early for The Outlaw Spectacular on Saturday October 3 featuring live entertainment, music and performance, bushranger siege, poets, folk artists, historical exhibitions, kids’ shows, street theatre, tours and more.
