Drought Proofing Feasibility Study

Rees to support Centroc Drought Proofing Feasibility Study to fellow NSW State Cabinet Ministers

The Hon Mr Nathan Rees, Minister for Water and Energy attended a meeting with Centroc representatives to discuss the funding of the regional drought proofing feasibility study last Friday afternoon. Mr Alan McCormack, heading up the team taking Centroc's submission to the Minister was very pleased with the meeting. "It is clear the Minister is very enthusiastic about our submission and he provided some good advice and guidance to us. He was particularly interested to hear the number of Councils working together to look at drought proofing feasibility in the region. As the project is across a number of Ministries said he will take it up with Ministers Koperberg, MacDonald and Kelly on our behalf."

Mayor Keane is delighted with the outcome of the meeting.

"The reports coming back from the meeting are very positive. I am looking forward to discussing the way forward with my fellow Mayors on 28 February in Orange," said Mayor Keane.

"Everyone understands that we need to know more about water management in these times of climate change. Even now with the great rainfalls we have had the major storages in the region at Wyangala, Wyndamere and Burrendong are still very low. We also know that water does not recognise Council boundaries so a regional feasibility study will identify catchment and cross catchment solutions," said Mayor Keane.

"Every one of the member Councils voted unanimously last December to seek funding for a regional drought proofing initiative and it is great to see such good results coming back so quickly," said Mayor Keane.

"This is an example of how regionalism works to our local Council area's benefit. The feedback from the State that we are getting is that regional approaches for local solutions are the way to go and I intend to be in their batting to ensure that gets involved and reaps the benefits," said Mayor Keane.

"I also think it appropriate to thank the team headed up by Parkes that are championing this regional initiative to drought proof Central NSW. While every Council in Centroc is involved in the programming one way or another, I really appreciate the extra effort Parkes are taking at the moment." said Mayor Keane.
