Microchipping, registration and regulationLast modified: July 24, 2009 - 1:51 PM
Forbes Shire Council is responsible for microchipping, registration and regulation of companion animals. Dogs owned before 1 July 1999Dogs registered prior to 1 July 1999 could continue to be registered under the existing Dog Act 1966 until 30 September 2002 at which time they must be registered for life under the Companion Animals Act and therefore they will need to be microchipped. Note: From 30 September 2002, dogs which were registered under the Dog Act and are 10 years of age or older may be lifetime registered at the desexed rate - that is $35 or $15 for pensioners - even if the animal is not desexed. Dogs born or changed owners after 1 July 1999Need to be identified by either microchip, a collar and tag (giving at least the name of the cat and the address or telephone number of the owner) or in some other approved manner. Do not need to be registered unless they change owners. Cats born or change owners after 1 July 1999Must be microchipped and registered under the Companion Animals Act. Microchipping must take place at twelve (12) weeks, when they change ownership or prior to release if impounded. Animals must be registration at or before six (6) months of age. How do I register my dog/cat under the Companion Animals Act?Before registering your pet, it must first be microchipped. This can be done at your local vet or accredited person. Registration is then to be made at Council's Administration Centre, Cnr Court & Harold Streets, Forbes. Please ensure that you bring a copy of the microchip form with you when registering your pet. Registration costs
