Forbes Shire Council recognises that responsible pet owners are good for their pets and society
Dogs registered prior to 1 July 1999 could continue to be registered under the existing Dog Act 1966 until 30 September 2002 at which time they must be registered for life under the Companion Animals Act and therefore they will need to be microchipped. Note: From 30 September 2002, dogs which were registered under the Dog Act and are 10 years of age or older may be lifetime registered at the desexed rate - that is $35 or $15 for pensioners - even if the animal is not desexed.
Dogs born or changed owners after 1 July 1999
Need to be identified by either microchip, a collar and tag (giving at least the name of the cat and the address or telephone number of the owner) or in some other approved manner.
Do not need to be registered unless they change owners.
Cats born or change owners after 1 July 1999
Must be microchipped and registered under the Companion Animals Act.
Microchipping must take place at twelve (12) weeks, when they change ownership or prior to release if impounded.
Animals must be registration at or before six (6) months of age.

Registered dogs - 14 days
Unregistered dogs - 7 days
Stock - 7 days then held at the discretion of Council
To report stray animals contact Council on (02) 6850 1344.
BARKING DOGS
Dogs bark for a number of reasons, but regardless of the cause the end result is a nuisance to neighbours and has a serious effect on the quality of life for those affected. The following procedures are provided as guidelines for alleviating the problems associated with a dog in the neighbourhood.
If you have a barking dog nuisance, Council suggests that you first approach the owner of the dog, as he or she may not be aware that a nuisance exists. In most cases owners want to do the right thing and will co-operate.
If this is unsuccessful, please contact the Environment Services Department on (02) 6850 1344. Council's Staff will investigate the problem and take appropriate action.
