THE ROLE OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT - Environmental
- Public Health

ENVIRONMENTAL - Air - odours, smoke and dust
- Noise - machinery, industrial
- Water Pollution - Chemicals into storm and ground water, fish kills, lake monitoring
- Assess applications for commercial/land/Ag - use and assess
- Complaints - Odour, noise, water
- Assess applications for environmental effects of major developments i.e. intensive Ag, industry, landuse alterations
PUBLIC HEALTH - Food shop inspections - 100 shops/resturants/hotels
- Vector control -chickens/mosquito/Ross River Fever
- Swimming pool - public pools and compliance with microbial control
- Air Conditioning - Legionella
- Septic Tanks - currently doing register/oyster score
- Emergency Management - fire/flood/storm - assist Dept. of Health
- Skin penetration and beauty shop inspections - incl. hairdressers/ beauticians/tattooing/body piercing
- Complaints - Untidy premises/rubbish etc
BUILDING - Assess DA's for compliance with relevant standards, BCA, council codes, LEP, policies
- Inspection of buildings during certain stages of inspection
- Advice to prospective builders
- Fire services i.e. hose reels, exit signs, fire alarms etc - inspection during building
- 210 applications per year - $13 million value
TOWN PLANNING - Granting approval for uses i.e. medium residential/industrial/commercial/intensive Ag
- Check DA for compliance with codes, LEP, SEPP, REP and policies
- Development in floodplain
- Strategic Planning - looking to design codes, policies to guide design
- Heritage/Conservation - Heritage Advisor
WASTE COLLECTION - Collection of household, industrial and commercial wastes
- Daroobalgie
- Village tips comprising of Ootha, Warroo, Garema, Wirrinya & Bedgerebong
ANIMAL CONTROL - Ensuring compliance with the Companion Animal Act
- Registration of companion animals
- Services of Impounding Officer/Pound Keeper
- Destruction of animals
- Barking dogs
- Straying stock
COUNCIL BUILDINGS - Maintenance of the Town Hall/Concourse/Committee Room etc.
- Arrange for contacts for cleaning

HOW TO BE.... The positions of Environmental Health & Building Surveyor requires appropriate tertiary qualification in either of the following courses offered through the University of Western Sydney: - Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Health),
- Bachelor of Building Surveying
The position of Town Planner requires appropriate tertiary qualification in either of the following courses:
- Bachelor of Urban & Regional Planning - University of New England,
- Bachelor of Planning - University of New South Wales
