Water Supply System

The water supply system in Forbes supplies water to Forbes and Ootha.  The Forbes water supply is from the Lachlan River and two bore wells constructed along the New Grenfell Road approximately 10 km South East of Forbes.   The bores provide a back-up water supply in the event of an extended drought threatens the river supply.  It is treated by a conventional type water treatment plant (capacity - 26 ml/d) and reticulated  to the town area via four service reservoirs (capacity - 30ml) and 130 kms of water mains. 

The water treatment process includes flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, chlorination and fluoridisation.

Sewerage Treatment System


Forbes Shire Council operates and maintains the wastewater treatment plant (capacity - 12000EP) located along the Newell Highway, approximately 3km South from the town centre.  The Forbes sewer system includes 17 pump stations (capacity - 20ml/d) and approximately 90kms of sewer mains.  Forbes sewage treatment plant was renewed in 2005 and uses an Extended Aeration Intermittently Decanted treatment process with chemical phosphorus removal.

The wastewater treatment process includeds pre-treatent screening and and grit removal, aeration, settling, chemical phosphorus removal, UV disinfection  and sludge treatment via extended sludge lagoons.
